What is a hydrosol?

A hydrosol is not an essential oil. It is an aqueous extract (ie mainly made up of water) which is obtained during the distillation of plants when one wishes to extract an essential oil. To put it simply, during the distillation of plants, we obtain on one side essential oil (part not soluble in water) and on the other side hydrosol (part soluble in water). The 2 parties separate.

The hydrosol is softer than the essential oil and it is therefore easier to use than the essential oil. It is perfectly suitable for children and young children. Each essential oil obtained by distillation has its hydrosol but certain hydrosols are not used because they have less interest.

The properties of hydrosols can be close to those of essential oils but can be quite different. This is why you should never replace an essential oil with a hydrosol (and vice versa).

The most used hydrosols : cornflower, Roman chamomile, cistus, orange blossom, laurel, lavender, lemon balm, mint, rose, thyme, verbena, lime blossom.

The main modes of use of the hydrosol :

  • As a compress: on certain parts of the skin.
  • In the bath, maniluve or footbath: 2 to 3 tablespoons in hot or cold water.
  • By mouth: by diluting in water. The amount will depend on the person's age.

⚠️ Hydrolat is fragile and therefore more sensitive to microbes. It is necessary to keep it after opening in the refrigerator for a maximum of 3 months.

⚠️ Internally, it is advisable to always approach a professional before use.
